REM is the period of sleep that is associated with dreaming. If during the time that you are experiencing a dream and you are suddenly woken up then you will experience REM sleep paralysis. The reason you experience the paralysis is because the change from being totally asleep to being fully awake is meant to be a gradual transition. When it becomes sudden the body and the brain’s reaction times are not the same and this causes the paralysis.

How come the paralysis only affects you when you are having dreams? The reason for this is that a dream is not a threat to you physically. So when sleep is suddenly interrupted during REM sleep and you try and react to things you believe to be real, the paralysis sets in.. Can you imagine what would happen if we reacted to everything that happened whilst we are asleep.
