Pain Types And Some Treatments Available

Written by bmlengel on February 3rd, 2010

What are the available options when aches and pains strike.

This depends on how severe the pain is, and where in the body the pain is occurring. If the pain is a mild headache, toothache or a fairly minor pain we all suffer from, an over the counter pain killer will usually suffice. in the case of toothache pain killers that contains Ibuprofen is the correct choice, toothache is often accompanied by inflammation in the problem area, Ibuprofen is an anti inflammatory and will therefore help to reduce inflammation.  If pain continues you should get medical attention, as the pain could be the symptom of a more serious medical problem. Pain is how your body tells you that something is amiss, do not ignore this message if pain persists.

There are two types of pain, chronic and acute pain. Acute pain is usually a pain that lasts for only a short time that recedes without further treatment, it has no serious underlying medical problems associated with it and normally needs only a simple over the counter pain medication. Chronic pain on the other hand is much more serious, chronic pain generally persists and is often associated with a more serious underlying disease or injury. It can often start from something as simple as a sprain or infection that eventually becomes more serious, or it can be the result of a developing disease. Chronic pain can persist for many months, possibly even years. As well as a need to treat the underlying cause, pain medication stronger than over the counter pain medication is usually required.  Among the most prescribed pain medications include tramadol, ultram and ultracet, tramadol being the most common prescribed. These pain killers are not scheduled as controlled substances, it is therefore possible to order tramadol online. In many cases pain relief medication is prescribed with seperate treatments to treat the problem causing the pain.

Possibly the most common form of pain we experience is headaches. A headache may well disappear without needing any other treatment, simple over the counter pain relief medication will normally be enough to ease the pain. Migraine is a much more severe type of headache and can be caused by various underlying conditions. A migraine can be accompanied by several other conditions, such as changing moods, light sensitivity, one sided headache and nausea. A migraine may only last for a few hours, but can continue for several days. Anyone with a migraine should get medical attention as soon as possible.

For pain associated with muscles and joints, physiotherapy is often used, and in many cases can result in complete cure of the problem. Electrical stimulation is a technique sometimes used, often as a last resort. Electrical stimulation works by interrupting pain signals inside the spinal cord. Acupuncture may be used to try and reduce pain, fine needles are entered at key points on the body, the needles disrupt the flow of spasms through the body. Needles may be placed in areas removed from the origin of the pain.

The main point to consider, is that if a pain becomes serious, in particular if it persists, get medical advice without delay, it could be due to a more serious underlying problem.
