MDS leukemia, also known as myelodysplastic syndromes, is described as a cluster of cancers that inflict the blood. These cancers either be non-progressive, having little to no impact on a human’s life, or they can progress to form into a severe case of leukemia, which can be life altering.

The beginning of MDS leukemia occurs when the blood-forming cell in the bone marrow starts acting erratically and the increase of blood cell production begins. Once this occurs, the marrow develops more blood cells than normal becoming full and is hyper-cellular marrow. During this time, the blood commonly becomes in the cells due to the high number of developing cells in the marrow that die before they can mature and be released into the bloodstream. The cells that do form and are able to be released are cancerous, though they normally can remain functional, having little impact on a person’s health. The one’s in question are the cells that are continuously building up without being released. What happens with MDs leukemia is that the white cells can consume and kill the bacteria but the blood vessels are plugged by platelets.

Typically, MDS turns into a form of leukemia, which is why the conditions are normally joined together and treated in the same manner. MDS is defined by doctors as when low proportions of blasts cells occur in the blood and marrow. When the health of a person has reached a state that is cancerous, it is referred to as MDS leukemia as the proportions reach a higher level and the disease worsens.

How Many People are Affected with MDS Leukemia?

Researchers state that it is unknown as to the number of new MDS leukemia cases in the United States. Although, it is believed the number of new acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) case are the same. It was reported in 2006, 12,000 people were diagnosed with AML, this is a cancer that is deadly and as of yet there is no cure found.

This disease is not often found in children, as studies prove, but MDS leukemia and AML is typically found in those above 60 years old.

How is MDS Leukemia Diagnosed?

MDS leukemia is usually discovered by testing a person’s blood cells count and examining the appearance of the blood cells. A blood marrow cell sample is analyzed to conclude if the chromosomes are abnormal from within. This examination and testing of the cells is known as cytogenic analysis and is effective in reaching a correct diagnosis for the patient.

MDS leukemia has some common signs including severe anemia, extreme tiredness and shortness of breath. Skin may be pale and complete weakness may exist. When the disease becomes more advanced, the patient can experience a loss of sense of well being, loss of appetite and overpowering weakness.
